Results from the UIL Competition last week in Perryton are in. Districts competing were Borger, Pampa, Dalhart, Dumas, and Perryton. Borger Middle School placed First, 6th-grade placed 1st, 5th-grade placed 3rd, 4th-grade placed 1st, 3rd-grade placed 3rd and, 2nd-grade placed 4th. The BMS One Act Play won 1st in District as well. This is the fourth time in 6 years that BMS has place 1st in District in Academic UIL and the 3rd time the One Act Play has received 1st in the last 6 years!! Way to Go Bulldogs!! We are proud of all our Bulldog Scholars!!

The Borger Middle School Student Council completed their annual canned food drive Thursday, Nov 15. Seventh and 8th graders collected 2,136 food items! All of these items were donated to Borger’s Living Water Ministries Food Pantry. Thank you to all who donated this year and understanding the meaning of helping others!

Gateway Elementary’s latest service learning project was a Penny War Challenge to raise money for the Rainbow Room. Students brought pennies to put in classroom containers for their class. Through the generosity of students, staff, and families, $752.37 was collected! Mrs. Forrest’s class had the most pennies collected. They are shown here with Ms. Bodey and Mrs. Morado.

Every year Crockett participates in The Rainbow Room Christmas Project. The Rainbow Room is an organization in Borger that helps to meet the needs of children who are taken out of their homes and placed in foster care. At Christmas, people/businesses/organizations “adopt” foster children and help to provide them with items on their Christmas list, including clothes and shoes. Crockett uses this opportunity to teach their students about the importance of community. They tie this project in with their Pillars of Character including responsibility, caring, and citizenship. They also take this opportunity to teach scholars about the importance of having compassion for others. A large container is set up in front of the office and students can drop in change. Donations are taken on a volunteer basis and done truly in the spirit of giving. This year over $230 was raised by students.

Borger ISD Holds PEAK Expo Approximately 63 students and their families attended a PEAK (Project-based Experiences to Accelerate) ACE (Association for Creativity Enrichment) parent meeting Tuesday evening in the Gateway/Crockett Library. A short parent meeting where the goals and objectives of ACE and the PEAK program were discussed and new officers were elected was held. Faith Odem, Hutchinson County Extension Agent, presented a short program encouraging parents to check out everything they offer such as scholarships for camps, robotics, leadership, and public speaking training. Scholars in 1st-8th grade were excited to share their projects and activities with parents that they have been working on in their PEAK classrooms. Projects shared and displayed at the PEAK Expo included robotics, chess, little houses, shark tank inventions, catapulting, and an egg drop STEM challenge. Many of the projects showcased were created in teams. Ms. Morrow’s 7th and 8th graders have competed against other students statewide at Don Harrington Center for catapulting and the egg drop challenge. Both activities require STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics) knowledge. They placed first last year in catapulting. Scholars at all campuses work with various technology and software and learn to become excellent problem solvers as issues arise. Some students played chess with other peers and parents at the showcase. Chess being taught in such a fast pace world requires these students to slow down and have patience and learn to be strategic thinkers. The Shark Tank inventions require students to think of a modern-day need and make inventions that they think could produce in a current market. With tiny houses being a current trend, sixth graders created their very own tiny houses. All four core subject areas in the curriculum are incorporated and many STEM projects are completed throughout the year.

TMEA, Texas Music Educators Association, sponsors the Texas All-State audition process to promote students' dedication to their musical knowledge and skill and to encourage TMEA member directors to support their students in this development. Beginning each fall, over 70,000 high school students across the state audition in their TMEA Region. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. A select group of musicians advances to compete against musicians from other Regions in their TMEA Area. The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in one of 15 Texas All-State Bands, Orchestras, and Choirs. These All-State ensembles rehearse for three days, directed by nationally recognized conductors, and perform on the closing day of the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention.
The All-State audition process for high school choir students leads ultimately to qualification in one of four All-State Choirs that perform at the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention: Treble Choir, Tenor-Bass Choir, Mixed Choir, and Small School Mixed Choir. Students attending 1A-6A schools are eligible to audition for any choir, but only 4A down to 1A may audition for the Small School Mixed Choir. Since the creation of the Small School Mixed Choir in 2015, the Borger HS choir students have auditioned for the Small School Mixed Choir.
On September 22, 2018, Borger HS Choir students competed in the All-District Small School Choir Auditions at Pampa High School. This contest can include choir students from any public or private school district, as well as, homeschool students, in the Texas Panhandle north of Plainview. At this contest, the top thirty-two students in each section, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, were selected to move on to the All-Region Choir Audition. Below is a list of the Borger HS students who auditioned and their chair, ranking. Those with a * will be moving on to the Small School All-Region Choir Auditions November 3 at Randall High School. The top 16 students in each section will be selected to move on to the Pre-Area contest in December. BHS Choirs are under the direction of Amy Green.

Several members of the BHS Speech and Debate Team competed in 2 tournaments in one day at the Yellow City Swing Tournament. In the Tascosa side, Pearson Bailey and Lars Nelson took 5th in Cross-Examination debate, Addison Hook took 3rd in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Kayli Munn took 2nd in Informative Speaking. On the Amarillo High side, Alyssa Perez took 4th in Lincoln Douglas Debate and Kayli Munn once again took the 2nd place trophy in Informative Speaking. Instructors are Cody Duncan and Steve Watson.
