On Friday, May 1st, Borger High School administrators celebrated academics with students and parents in a unique way. Due to the current situation with Covid-19, the traditional Academic Awards Banquet, which is held each year to honor the top ten academic performers in each class at BHS was cancelled. Cancelling the banquet was a true disappointment as this event is widely anticipated by students, parents, family members, board members and administrators.
In lieu of the banquet, Mrs. Conaway and Mr. Ammerman delivered large balloon bouquets to each of the 40 students at their homes all over the county. Deliveries started before 10 am on Friday morning. The last delivery was made after six o’clock in Stinnett. The main feature of the balloon bouquet was a large number that corresponded to the rank of the student receiving this honor. Mr. Welch, BISD Superintendent, joined the BHS team to deliver the bouquets to seniors.
Throughout the day, there were countless smiles from students, parents and families. This celebration also acted as a reunion of sorts as the administrators have not seen any of these students since before Spring Break.
Mrs. Conaway and Mr. Ammerman would like to thank Lisa Rodriguez for always helping to make their crazy ideas a reality. They would also like to thank Chocolate Tulip (517 North Main Street) for their professionalism and kindness. They did an outstanding job having everything ready and organized and the bouquets were beautiful.
BHS will be sharing the photos each day this week through Thursday. We will share a different grade level each day and announce the valedictorian and salutatorian on Friday. Colby Webb is a 2015 Borger High School graduate. While in high school, Colby played both football and baseball. In baseball, he was awarded with First Team All-District honors as a First Basemen his Junior and Senior years. Academically, Colby excelled in high school. He graduated with several college credit hours and took several AP courses. He also maintained a position in the top 10 students of his class all four years of high school. He was active in the National Honor Society, BHS Day of Caring, and the Snack Pak 4 Kids program in
Borger. After graduation, Colby went on to Oklahoma Panhandle State University to play baseball and pursue degrees in Biology and Chemistry. While at OPSU, Colby maintained a 4.0 GPA, and participated in several volunteer programs in the city of Guymon, Oklahoma. After a hip injury during his Freshman year of college, Colby decided to transfer to Oregon State University to pursue degrees in both Bio-health Sciences and Chemistry with a Pre-Med option. At Oregon State University, Colby participated in multiple years of undergraduate research, maintained above a 3.5 GPA, and will graduate in June of 2020 with a double major in Bio-health Sciences and Chemistry. He has worked as an Athletic Performance coach for multiple high school athletic programs in Oregon while in college and is currently operating as a self-employed Fitness Professional while finishing up his research at Oregon State University. He has plans to pursue a career in the Research and Development of Pharmaceuticals. Borger ISD and Borger High School are extremely proud of Colby and wish him well in his future endeavors!

Alexis Aguilar is a 2014 Borger High School graduate. While in high school Alexis played football and played soccer all four years. In soccer, he was named district Newcomer of the Year his ninth-grade year and received district honors his junior and senior years. Academically, Alexis excelled in high school. He graduated with 18 hours of college credit and took several AP classes. He was active in NHS and participated in the BHS Day of Caring and helped his class begin the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk for a Cure. This fundraiser has become a traditional activity for BHS seniors. After graduation, Alexis went on to finish his Associate Degree at Frank Phillips College. He continued to excel academically at FPC and upon graduation; he received a Presidential Transfer Scholarship from Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech University, Alexis continued playing soccer as a member of the men’s soccer club during his undergraduate career as a Red Raider. He graduated from TTU in 2018 from the Rawls College of Business. As an undergrad, he made the Dean’s List in 2016 and 2017. He continued his education at Texas Tech and graduated with his Master’s in Science in Accountancy in December 2019. Currently, Alexis is working at Whitley Penn LLP in Fort Worth as an Audit Associate while studying to obtain his CPA. #BorgerISD and Borger High School are extremely proud of Alexis and wish him well in his future endeavors!

It’s encouraging to know that even in the bleakest of times our impact on students, and likewise their impact on us, still shines through. Earlier last week, Borger High School Junior, Kayli Munn became the newest Bulldog to receive the National Speech and Debate Association’s coveted Academic All-American achievement. This make her 1 of 3 BHS students that currently hold the title. Munn earned this from her outstanding talents in Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, and Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. Unlike the other students that have achieved this, Munn currently participates in speaking events only which requires a completely different skill set than their debate counterparts. Munn sets the bar at a high level for creativity, poise, and humility. She has dedicated countless hours to her craft, and it shines through in her performance. There is rarely a tournament where she doesn’t find her way into the winner’s circle in one or more events. Congratulations to Kayli for conquering this great milestone! CONGRATULATIONS! Borger High School junior, and Graphic Design student, Kayli Spickes has received a Gold Medal in the 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing competition. Her piece, “Fowl Play” was created in Adobe CC using Photoshop tools. More than 110,000 students submitted nearly 320,000 works of art digitally in December. In the first round of competition Kayli received 4 Gold Keys with her digital artwork submitted and 1 Gold Key with a sculpture piece and a Silver Key for another digital piece. The Gold Keys awarded her allowed them to move on to National competition. Kayli had to wait until late March to find out how she would do at National level. Only 3,000 works received a National Medal which places Kayli within the top 1% of all submissions! Her winning piece will be published on the Online Galleries at artandwriting.org in June. Her name will also be listed in the Yearbook 2020, which features a selection of work by National Medalists. Kayli is busy making a video that will be uploaded with her artwork and submitting various forms required of her. The National ceremony will be held at Carnegie Hall in NYC on June 4, 2020. Her artwork will be digitally displayed May 29-June 14, 2020. There are many events scheduled for the National winners, at this time. “I have had the honor and pleasure of working with this young artist since her freshman year, but, heard about her talent early on from the middle school art teacher, Ms. Rhea Ann Morrow. She has taken Art I under the instruction of Ms. Washer, an currently Adv. Art under Mrs. Renick, and in her 3rd year of Graphic Design with myself, Mrs. Kerr. Kayli has been to state art competition (VASE) twice and qualified this year as well with a sculpture piece. She is talented in all areas of art! She has designed numerous posters for our school, helped fellow teachers with t-shirts and various other art projects throughout the years. Too many accolades to mention! Kai Kemp Butler graduated from Borger High School in 2014. She then moved to Dallas to start school at the University of North Texas. She finished all four years there and graduated in May of 2018 with her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She graduated cum laude with national honors. While she was going to school full-time she worked part-time as a bank teller for Advancial Federal Credit Union. Once she graduated college she moved up as a loan officer for the same credit union. Since June of 2019, she has worked as an accountant at the corporate office in downtown Dallas for the same credit union. She plans to learn even more and stay in the accounting field. She said that BHS prepared her for everything! She wants to expand her career and keep moving up as high as she can. In Fall 2021 she plans on going back to North Texas to obtain her master’s degree to open even more doors. She is married to Dontrae Butler, another 2014 Borger High School graduate. Dontrae played football, basketball and track all through high school. Upon graduation, he played football at Moorpark University in California. He returned to Borger to earn his I & E certificate from Frank Phillips College. Dontrae is currently working as a traveling electrician. Kai and Dontrae have a one-year-old son named Ah’Lee and will welcome another baby into the family in July. Dontae Chambers is a 2016 graduate of Borger High School. In high school, Dontae was a varsity letterman in football, basketball, and track. He participated in these all four years. Dontae earned 15 hours of college credit in high school which helped him get a jump start on his college career at McMurry University in Abilene. Dontae ran track for McMurry for two years before deciding to concentrate on his academics full-time. This May he will be graduating with a major in Biomedical Science. He is currently awaiting his acceptance letter to chiropractic school. Dontae was elected Student Body President this year at McMurry. His two big initiatives have been eliminating smoking on campus and voter awareness. Alumni Spotlight: Claire Huffine Hillyer is a 2016 graduate of Borger High School. She graduated from Borger High School with 21 hours of college credit having competed in tennis all four years of high school. As a ninth-grader, she had never played tennis. However, with lots of practice, grit and determination, she ended up going to state her junior and senior years. Claire was able to use her high school success to sign a tennis scholarship to McMurry University in Abilene where she has continued to be successful. She was named Freshman of the Year her first year at McMurry by earning 23 wins and winning her way into the National Tournament. She is currently the number one player on the team and recently earned the women’s player of the week award in the American Southwest Conference for her success so far this season. Claire will graduate in May with a major in graphic design. She is in the honor’s program at McMurry and has been on the Dean’s List every semester. She is married to 2016 Borger High School graduate Sam Hillyer who is also an athlete at McMurry. Sam plays baseball and had a distinguished athletic career in baseball at both Borger High School and Frank Phillips College. Samantha Huckabee graduated in 2014 from Borger High School. She was ranked in the Top Ten of her class and finished with 25 college credit hours. Samantha went on to graduate cum laude from Texas A&M University in College Station with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health. She is currently finishing her last semester at Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing in Dallas where she will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Samantha was named to the Presidential Honor Roll for the summer 2019 and fall 2019 semesters. She is a member of the National Nurses Association, the Baylor Student Nurses Association, and the Emergency Nurses Association. She was recently hired as an ER nurse at UT Southwestern, the #1 hospital in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and the #2 hospital in Texas. Samantha will start her career in July 2020. The Borger High School Speech and Debate Team participated at the Canyon Tascosa swing. Kayli Potts and Lars Nelson both advanced to quarterfinals in the Canyon tournament and on Saturday Lars Nelson again advanced to quarterfinals in the Tascosa tournament. Kayli Potts received enough points qualifying her for TFA state. She also received a very unique award for an outstanding LD speaker. This award goes to the best overall speaker in the preliminary rounds. It is incredibly difficult to achieve and to our knowledge, it is the first one that Borger has brought home! Congratulations to both outstanding Bulldogs!!
