Borger High School has hit an all-time high for enrollment in their dual-credit program. For the Fall, 271 students are taking 713 classes. This is 17% of Frank Phillips College’s entire enrollment. Also, our students make up over 30% of FPC’s dual-credit enrollment with 271 of their 899 dual-credit students being from Borger High School.
In addition, our students are taking 2,091 college credit hours which is 33.4% of all dual-credit hours being taken at FPC. FPC has a total of 6,254 total dual-credit hours being taken by their 19 cooperating schools. BHS is at the top of these 19 schools with 271 dual-credit students. The next closest high school has 92 students enrolled in their dual-credit program.
In May, Borger High School will graduate our first ever Associate of Science Degrees in I & E (Instrumentation and Electrical). Three students will graduate with this degree, with one being female. We have 13 students on track to get their Associate of Science degree in May with three more set to finish their degree in the summer following their high school graduation. If these students all complete their course work, BHS will have 19 graduates with associates degrees compared to the 15 students that graduated with their associates this past school year.
Borger High School has also seen tremendous growth in our certification programs. We have record numbers in all certification classes with 15 cosmetology students, 44 welding students and a combined total of 35 I&E and Process Tech students. 94 total students are working on certificates that will allow them to go directly into the workforce upon graduation.
None of this would be possible without our valuable partnerships with local industry and our local United Way, along with their partner agency Helping Hands. Borger High School would also like to thank our superintendent and school board for their continued support of this program. BISD pays for two college classes each semester (starting junior year) for any student wishing to enroll in dual-credit classes. We are Borger High!

The Velma Freeman Gillespie and Zelma Freeman Root Foundation was established in 1995 by Mrs. Gillespie’s family to honor a deserving teacher at the end of each school year. Velma Freeman Gillespie and Zelma Freeman Root were twin sisters who both taught in the Borger ISD system for over twenty-five years each. Mrs. Root came to Borger in 1944. Mrs. Gillespie came to visit her from Arkansas in 1946 and never went back. Mrs. Gillespie taught in Borger Junior High School for 25 years. Mrs. Root taught at Borger High School for 26 years. Both retired in 1971. After retiring from BISD, Zelma Root taught at Frank Phillips Junior College for five years. Mrs. Gillespie had two sons, Dr. Hamp Gillespie and Dr. Mike Gillespie, who both graduated from Borger Independent School District. After Velma Gillespie passed away in October 1994, her sons wanted to honor their mother and aunt by establishing the foundation. The award is given to a deserving teacher in the academic field who possesses the following: 1. A concern for students and the capability to inspire them 2. The ability and willingness to work cooperatively with colleagues 3. A drive to initiate activities that improve instruction for students 4. An ability to work effectively with different groups in the community 5. The desire to stay informed of current educational theories and practices 6. An ability and willingness to make meaningful contributions to education 7. Examples of innovations started in the nominees’ classrooms. The 2020-2021 campus nominees included: Katie Francis, Kindergarten Instructor at Paul Belton Elementary (not pictured); Lisa Cole, First-Grade Instructor at Gateway Elementary; Angie Moran, Fourth-grade Instructor at Crockett Elementary; Jordan Boyd, Fifth-grade ELA Instructor at Borger Intermediate; Ashley McLaughlin, 8th Grade ELA Instructor at Borger Middle School and Jon Koehn, Borger High School History Instructor and Coach. This year, the Root-Gillespie award went to Ashley McLaughlin. She will receive $750 to spend in her classroom. Each campus nominee will receive $250 for their classroom. Along with setting up her own classroom, Mrs. McLaughlin volunteered to help teachers at BMS set up Google Classrooms, create videos and gave them support to provide instruction online and in the classroom. Face-to-face and online attendance was a challenge last year. Mrs. McLaughlin volunteered to keep track of the online attendance and made phone calls when students were not engaged in the online classrooms. Mrs. McLaughlin is always studying to build her craft. She went above and beyond to learn more about the Units of Study and how to implement them in her classroom. She turned her current classroom into a reading and writing workshop. In order to inspire boys to be more successful in the classroom, she created the 8th-grade Boys Lunch Club where students read a simple passage and played physical games and answered STAAR type questions to earn rewards. The club started with 20 students and grew to 45 by the time for STAAR testing! Mrs. McLaughlin was also on the site-based committee, worked with Rotary Club with the Four-Way essay contest, and volunteered by handing out backpacks at the Back to School Fair. Students know they are in a safe place when they walk into Mrs. McLaughlin’s room. They see positive inspirational messages and a reading section with huge comfy pillows. You will often see students going to see her for a piece of advice, a pep talk, a joke or a piece of candy. She is also the person the staff can go to when they need a boost. Congratulations to Mrs. McLaughlin and thank you for your service!

Two Borger ISD Educators to be Honored at Region 16 Since 1969, the Texas Teacher of the Year Program (TOY) has honored excellence in classroom education and provided a forum to showcase many outstanding educators whose efforts and example have inspired their students, their colleagues, and the communities they serve. Texas Teacher of the Year is the highest honor that the State of Texas can bestow upon a teacher. Facilitated by the Texas Association of School Administrators, the Texas Teacher of the Year Program annually recognizes and rewards teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and excellence in teaching. Every fall, 40 Regional Teachers of the Year are selected -- one elementary and one secondary teacher from each of the 20 Education Service Center regions in Texas. Six finalists are then chosen from among the 40 semi-finalists. Following an interview process, the Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year and Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year are chosen from among the six finalists. One is selected to represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year program. Borger ISD would like to congratulate their two District Nominees, Lisa Cole, Elementary Teacher of the Year 2021 Nominee, and Amy Earles, Secondary Teacher of the Year 2021 Nominee. Cole and Earles were selected by an Administrative Committee. Lisa Cole has been a 1st-grade teacher at Gateway Elementary for 8 years. This past school year, Ms. Cole taught remote 1st graders. She provided students with an environment of learning as if they were sitting at the tables in her classroom. She has spent many hours with each student reading with them, covering math objectives and so much more. Ms. Cole has been an asset on campus by providing time for other remote teachers to come to observe her setup and process for meeting with students. She has invested so much time to ensure every meticulous detail and all materials students will need are labeled and ready for each week. Ms. Cole has also provided instruction for any student who went into quarantine and worked closely with other classroom teachers to ensure they returned to class without any time lost. She has interacted with almost 50 different students throughout this year and each one has received the same amount of attention and care. Ms. Cole has made a connection to her learners that most would not think would be possible being remote. She also has made sure students were able to participate in school events such as pictures and class parties all while respecting and adhering to social distancing guidelines. Ms. Cole did a reading challenge where her class read a total of almost 1,300 books! Gateway Principal James Russell stated, “I am truly blown away at the magnitude of learning happening in her online classroom, and to say she has gone above and beyond is an understatement. I am proud to say that Lisa Cole is a Borger ISD teacher, but take more pride that she represents Gateway Elementary!” Mrs. Earles has been a master teacher at Borger Middle School for 15 years. She has been on top of things from the get-go this year and has done an amazing job being a positive force on campus to students and staff. Every day in her classroom her students are diligently working hard, having great academic conversations, and doing high-level group/independent work. Her dedicated instruction shows as her data has increased every single 6 weeks. Her students love being in her class because she has built such strong relationships with them and they definitely aim to please her with their hard work. Borger Middle School Principal Brandon Harris states, “Mrs. Earles has been an absolute ROCK this year in a time of crazy uncertainty with Covid and all of the weekly changes that came with it. BMS is the best campus because we have a rock star like her on our team! We LOVE her and appreciate everything she does for us!”

In 2015, after over a year of planning, Borger High School began a partnership with Frank Phillips College that would benefit many Borger students for years to come. Borger High School students can attend FPC while still in high school and graduate with their associate degree before graduating high school through the Cohort Program at BHS.
BHS Principal Matt Ammerman said, “This program took an amazing amount of planning and cooperation between FPC and BHS prior to the program starting.”
The first cohort graduated from the program in 2017. To date, there have been 49 students graduate from the program with 15 more slated to receive their associates degree this May. “We are always well over the state average of students graduating with associates degrees,” stated Principal Ammerman.
One student who took advantage of this program was Kylee Ramsay, 2017 Borger High School Valedictorian. Kylee attended Borger ISD Kindergarten-12th-grade, received her associate degree from FPC through the cohort, then she attended Missouri Southern State University for 3 years where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in psychology. She is now attending medical school at Kansas City University. She did all this before the age of 21! She was able to add a minor to her undergraduate degree and still graduate in 3 years because of the associates of science degree from FPC.
Kylee credits the Cohort Program for giving her the confidence to achieve her dream. “My education at Borger ISD helped foster my confidence in my own abilities and that no goal was too far out of reach. Cohort was a big part of that because it boosted my application when I was trying to get into the partnership program between my undergrad and the medical school. It also gave me the unique opportunity to provide input on the benefits of having peer support when going through an accelerated program.”
Kylee goes on to say, “I only realized I wanted to be a doctor when I got to high school, but I’ve always loved science. Learning about medicine never gets less exciting.”
When asked how it felt to be accepted to medical Kylee stated, “ Getting accepted into medical was simultaneously the best feeling and absolutely terrifying!”
Kylee still has a few years of school ahead of her, but with her background and determination, we know she will be a great success! “I have 3.5 years of medical school left and many more after that. Most days are hard, and they often compare the learning to trying to drink out of a firehose, but each new step is hard when you’re in it. I remember being so overwhelmed by the material junior year, then again, each new year in undergrad and now those things don’t seem so hard so I know that I can get through this too.”
Kylee is the daughter of Gail and Dave Ramsay.
When reflecting on the first-ever cohort at Borger High School, Associate Principal DeDe Conaway stated, “The cohort brought this group of students together, and they became like family. It was incredible to see them love and support each other. Kylee played a huge role in making the first-ever BHS College Cohort successful. She truly encouraged and helped her peers that were also in the cohort. This group of young people will always have a special place in our hearts, and they will always be remembered as the first group of students ever to graduate from BHS with a college degree.”
Borger ISD is pleased to be able to offer this program to students and hopes its’ relationship with FPC continues for many years to come!
