COVID-19 UPDATE MARCH 31,2019

 Borger ISD Families

Today, March 31, 2020, Governor Abbott modified his executive order to further reduce the spread of COVID-19 saying Texans are expected to continue social distancing.  This order allows only essential services in the state until April 30In addition, the governor ordered all Texas schools to remain closed through May 4, 2020 and that date may be extended.

Governor Abbott stressed that Texans should continue with the president’s guidance concerning social distancing.  The state has listed what is considered essential activities and services on the Texas Emergency Management website. http://tdem.texas.gov/essentialservices/

As always, Borger ISD will keep updating you as the situation changes. We will continue providing breakfast and lunch Monday – Friday and at-home learning instruction.

While this latest executive order saddens us, we know it is in the best interest for us currently.  We may be apart, but we are in this together.

At Home Learning Information

IF YOUR STUDENT IS DOING GOOGLE CLASSROOM, THEY DO NOT NEED AN INSTRUCTION PACKET.

As of today, March 27, school is still canceled through April 3rd due to COVID-19.  As the situation develops, we will be making school closure decisions on a week-by-week basis.

Feel free to call the campus or email the principal or teacher with any questions.  E-mails are on the Faculty Page on each campus website.  They are generally firstname.lastname@borgerisd.net.  Teachers will be contacting you sometime during the week so, be aware of this if there is an unknown number on your phone.

Thank you for your patience as we go through this new process.  We are here to support and help you however we can.

Calls, text and emails went out this morning to parents.

Below is the plan for the campuses to deliver instructional support to students during the school closure.  Internet and paper-based options will be available at all campuses.

We will be following the TEA guidelines for paper-based packet pick up:

•  Parents and students should maintain distance from other parents while picking up packets. For example, they should remain 6 feet from anyone else while picking up packets. Parents may display a sign with their child’s name and grade level and the teacher will come to the car door.

• “DO NOT COME if you are symptomatic. Either send someone else or wait until you are no longer symptomatic.”

•  If you bring students, please let them know they won’t be able to get out and hug their teacher.  This is very important for the little ones.

Paul Belton Elementary

All students need packets.

Parents can pick up instructional packets Monday, March 30, from 8:00-12:00 AM. Kindergarten will be handing out packets in the north (rear) parking lot (by the playground) and Pre K in the east bus lane drop off/parking.  Teachers will hand packets to parents in the car (drive-through).

Pre-K will be using the ClassDojo app to communicate with parents during this time. If you are unable to access the app, their teacher will be contacting you next week.

Gateway Elementary

All students need packets.

Packets will be available for pick up on Monday, March 30, from 8-12 AM in the front drop off area.  Gateway teachers also have webpages where they will leave messages and parents can contact them easily there through email.  For assignments that need to be turned into teachers, Parents with an iPhone or iPad, you have a scanner on your phone using the "Notes App."  Open a new note, press the camera button, the option to scan document will pop up.  Once the document is scanned, you can email it.

Crockett Elementary

All students need packets.

Parents can pick up packets Monday, March 30, from 8-12 AM, in the front drop off area.  Crockett students may use their Class Dojo to communicate with teachers.  If you don’t have an account, call the Crockett office at 273-1054, Monday through Friday, from 10-12 AM and 1-3 PM.  There will also be a Hotline if you have any questions at the same number at the same time.

Borger Intermediate School

IF YOUR STUDENT IS DOING GOOGLE CLASSROOM, THEY DO NOT NEED AN INSTRUCTION PACKET.

BIS is using Google Classroom for online learning.  Students have used it all year but if they forgot their logins the parents can email Mr. Harris at brandon.harris@borgerisd.net for them.  Packets will be available to those without the internet on Monday,  March 30th,  from 8 am to noon at the BIS front door drop off.  Packets won't be returned.  Parents are to take photos of completed work and email it to their students' teachers.  If you do Google Classroom, you will not need to take pictures.

A message from Borger Middle School:

First, I would like to take a moment to thank all our families for your patience and support. This worldwide pandemic has caused us to rethink how we continue student learning during this time. Through a series of several meetings with teachers and professional learning communities we have developed a plan for students and families to continue learning while the schools are closed for precautions.
First, we will utilize Google Classroom for instruction within our four core subjects: English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. This will allow teachers and students to interact with each other daily. The advantage with Google Classroom is our students have already been using this platform in English Language Arts and 8th Grade Science. On Friday, March 27, our teachers will be contacting you to give you new codes to sign into your new classes. However, we also realize that not all our students will be capable of accessing Google Classroom from home. For this reason, we will also provide the option of receiving paper packets. These will be available
for pickup from BMS on Monday, March 30 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We will have staff members stationed in front drive-through so that you can simply drive up and pick up the work.
Our biggest goal during this time is to keep our students learning while keeping perspective that this will not be the regular classroom. We want this experience to be fun, engaging, and family friendly. If you have any questions, you can email any of your teachers and they will be ready to help you. You can also call the school and one of our staff members will contact you back shortly.

God Bless

Borger High School

Borger High School will be using Google Classroom to deliver instruction online.  Students will receive emails from their teachers with instructions on how to get started. Instructional packets will be available for students who do not have Google Classroom with teachers communicating with these students by email.  The consumables will be available in packets to be picked up at the high school next week following the schedule below.  Please email Mr. Ammerman (matt.ammerman@borgerisd.net) or Mrs. Conaway (dede.conaway@borgerisd.net) if your student plans on picking up consumables on Monday.  This will allow us to pull your child’s schedule and personally pack the consumable packet with his/her class work for each course.  Your student’s schedule will be attached to the front of the consumable packet with teachers’ names beside the courses.   Teacher emails are listed  below if you have any questions regarding the packets.  Teachers will be in contact with students through Google Classroom and through email for students working on consumables.  Teachers will provide details related to the packets by email regarding instructions and individual needs of students.

The following schedule is only for students who need to pick up instructional packets as they can’t access Google Classroom or prefer traditional instructional packets to online instruction.  Students who are getting instruction through Google Classroom do not need to pick up consumables.

Parents and/or students will drive up to the front of BHS in the student drop off lane where there will be staff members ready to hand the packet to them without anyone having to exit the car.  If you have emailed or called ahead with the student’s name, there will not be a wait for the packet.  If you haven’t called ahead, you may have to wait or return while staff gets your students’ classwork together per his/her specific schedule.  Once again, the consumable pick-up in front of the school is only for those unable to access Google Classroom.  Please email us if the times below do not work for you and we can get you a time on Tuesday that fits your schedule for pick-up of consumables.

 Monday, March 30th

Freshmen A – L (last names begin with A – L) will pick up work from 8:00 to 9:00

Freshmen M – Z (last names begin with M – Z) will pick up work from 9:10 to 10:10

Seniors M – Z (last names begin with M – Z) will pick up work from 3:40 to 4:10

All dual credit students will complete their FPC courses online.  The FPC instructors will start communicating with them through their FPC email accounts.  Students can access their email through the FPC portal.  If any dual credit students have trouble with their FPC email accounts, they can use their BHS email account to contact Mr. Ammerman, Mrs. Conaway, or Mrs. Peralez.

Borger High School students taking Odyssey classes will be able to access these classes from home starting March 30th.  Special permission has been granted for them to work on their courses from home with Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Brame, and Mr. Gentry monitoring and assisting them remotely.  Students will be able to email their Odyssey instructor if they have any technical issues with the program or any questions about the content.

Borger High School will have a hotline set up each day to answer questions and to help students and parents get in touch with their teachers.   The hotline will be open from 11:00 to 1:00 Monday through Friday.  Please call 273-1029.

We want you to know that we love and miss your child and will do everything we can to help them during this difficult time.

Governor Issues Executive Order that Includes Statewide Closure of Texas Schools
Gov. Greg Abbott announced today that he has issued an executive order that aligns with the standards set by the president and the Centers for Disease Control. The order, which is effective at midnight Friday, March 20, through midnight Friday, April 3 (and subject to extension) requires:

  • all Texas schools to temporarily close, but offer online or other learning options to students
  • all Texans to avoid gatherings of 10 or more people
  • all bars, restaurants, food courts, and gyms to close

The governor said that this is not a shelter-in-place order. It does not prohibit people from leaving their homes or from traveling domestically. All critical infrastructure will remain open; government entities will still provide essential services.

UPDATE  March 17  AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT WELCH

To Our Borger ISD Family:

Currently, there are no confirmed cases of COVID 19 in Hutchinson County. However, as Spring Break travel comes to a close, we want to make sure we are taking every necessary precaution. Therefore, Borger ISD will be extending Spring Break for students beginning March 23rd through March 27th. As the situation develops, we will be making school closure decisions on a week-by-week basis.

During this period of school closure, it is the intent of BISD, under the guidance and directives of Commissioner Morath and TEA, to continue to provide learning opportunities for our students. While student and community health are our main concerns, it is also important that as educators we continue to prepare our students for the next school year and beyond. District administration and teachers will be working to put together a plan for continued learning in the days to come. We are also committed to continuing to provide breakfast and lunch for students. Details will be communicated via our website, social media and our direct communication system.

Borger ISD Staff: Please watch your email in the coming days for updates from district and school administration.

These are very stressful times for our community and country at large. Things are changing at a fast pace and we will continue to monitor the CDC, local health agencies, and the guidance from education officials and communicate these to you. We are all in this together, and our community cooperation will ensure that Borger weathers this storm well.

Please follow hygiene and social distancing guidelines, take care of your families, and work together to keep our community safe.

Chance Welch, Superintendent

Borger ISD is actively monitoring developments and information related to the coronavirus (COVID-19).  Our priority is the safety of our students and staff. Our Maintenance/Custodial Dept. is being proactive by  using specialized sanitizer in bathrooms, classrooms, weight rooms and buses.  All custodial staff also have specialized disposable sanitizer wipes.  These are used in classrooms as well as computer labs daily.

We have also encouraged our students and staff to ensure proper handwashing techniques by washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

We are advising parents that if their student is sick, to please notify your child’s school and keep them at home until fever free for at least 24 hours without medication.

Borger ISD is following the (CDC) Center for Disease Control and Prevention  everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

We are encouraging our community to also follow these preventatives by posting links and PDFs on our website and social media.

Borger ISD is fortunate to have nurses at each campus to help us stay current on these matters and advise accordingly.
